I meant like made in China maybe, trying to look like Murano glass?
Is there any general rule about the pontil marks? Like the Italian should be always ground and polished or there are exceptions? Or made in China pieces can also have smooth bases....

Hi Kard - if there's a pattern to pontil marks I haven't been able to figure it out. I've found Chinese pieces with smooth bases and pieces by really good manufacturers with bad pontil scars. It may really be a question of whether you want to employ someone to smooth out the base. In places where labor is cheaper you could more easily afford to hire someone to do that. JMHO

I said it a few days ago,but it bears repeating... I was recently in home goods and looked at some glass, with polished bases, that were made in china. I swear,if not for the tag, youd have sworn they were Czech or murano. So be careful .

Not quite sure why you're saying be careful? Nothing wrong with good quality Chinese glass.

I just meant be aware some folks might represent it as something its not,and I agree with you. If something is pretty,I don't care if its from china yesterday. :)

Ah, gotcha. The generic Murano label. ;)

If anyone wants to see a really bad pontil, I've a stunning Whitefriars weight with an appalling one!

Chinese sellers often call their glass beads "Murano" beads.

They may actually use glass rods made in Murano to make them, so technically calling them "Murano" may be somewhat legit. But it's misleading, plus the quality isn't always as good as genuine Venetian/Murano items. And, of course, it's had a serious impact on the price and saleability of real Venetian beads.

As someone who collected Venetian glass beads, used them in jewelry, and sold them, it bugs me to see the huge impact this has had. :(
