I'm currently pondering whether to expand my (very) small collection of Delftware by purchasing a pair of garlic-neck vases (c 55cm high) which are currently on sale.

Although the price is relatively modest, there are a couple of glaze cracks along with the usual chips, etc.

I'd be grateful if any more experienced Delft collectors were to suggest the approximate age of the vases, and if possible, to identify the maker's mark on the base. The varying size of the 'garlic' necks makes me think that they might be earlier, rather than later (?).

Thank you for any help whatsoever.

Oh, and whilst I'm here, my best wishes to all members for a peaceful Christmas !

18th century i would say by quick look (not by sign.). At most early 19th.

    Nice! Love such.

I think they are made by Makkum Tichelaar and maybe date late 19th C or so.

I have two huge polychrome onion vases made by them in different time periods so they definitely have made them at times.

This is some information on their crossed T marks and dating associated from the book Discovering Dutch Delftware by Van Hook.

Thank you all very much indeed.

So it looks very much like that the vases were made by Makkum Tichelaar at around the end of the 19th century onwards - hmmmmm. Not quite as old as I had thought - and hoped. As they say, you learn something new every day.
I've got to admit, the defects/damage (esp. cracks) have slightly put me off purchasing the vases. Had they been 18th century, it wouldn't be too bad, but late 19th century.....? Further to this, a round trip of around 200 miles cannot really be justified in this case. And there's no point in buying for the sake of buying.

Nevertheless, I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to members for all their generous contributions !!

    Yes, the Tichelaar mark.
There is a saying that Makkums is always a century behind Delfts. Maybe not an exact time frame, but it is something to remember.
I love Makkums though, and often prefer it over Delfts.
Yes, they are, anyone can visit Tichelaar and see them paint the ceramics, just like anyone can with Delfts.

Clear. I must confess the hand painted gave me a false first thought too. Where it's not the first blue porcelain i saw/held. My weak excuses that my general interest goes to Delft and Makkum i know 'nothing'.

Hope you didn't pay to much and still are happy with this still beautifull piece from a good brand.

It is pottery, not porcelain, as is Delfts.

As faience (tin glazed pottery), Delft is easily chipped and cracked. Handle with care!
