Hey everyone. Found this interesting watering can. Its marked china on the bottom but its got some patina to it. Someone tried polishing it at some point. Is this just retail made in china crap? I just thought it looked cool and different. 20190517_182809_compress58.jpg 20190517_182832_compress91.jpg 20190517_183131_compress69.jpg 20190517_183026_compress53.jpg 20190517_182940_compress12.jpg

Ive tried to find one to compare but no luck so far. I think its Chinese, pure art deco, and fantastic ! Id gently wash it in some warm soapy water to get that polish off .

It is gorgeous, and judging from the CHINA font it is Art Deco period as well as style.
It was made in China, and I am sure it wasn't made to be given away to passers-by, so yes, retail as well. So I don't really know what you mean. After all, it is possible to have made in China for retail without it being 'crap', as this piece proves. Just like it is possible to have quality items made for retail in the US or elsewhere in the world.

During the Cultural Revolution in China many Chinese Art Deco items were destroyed for being too Western.

Normally i dont buy anything that says "made in china". Also because the house i got it from was mixed with old and new. Many "homegoods items" made in india and china.....but that little teapot just looked different so i took a chance. Glad to hear that it peaks everyone interest. I will be washing that crusty white stuff off too.

I guess this is a case where knowing your marks helps. This is an old 'China' mark, and when the design is good.....

    Hi,
Please remember that items marked CHINA are certainly not the same as MADE in China.

China was making stunning works of art when Europe was occupied by hunter gatherers.1930s China White glass weights are very collectable, and some of their modern glass is superb. Their modern porcelain is lovely stuff.

What I'm saying is it's wrong to categorise. Indian and Chinese made goods can be very high quality indeed, especially given their burgeoning middle class who have high disposable incomes.
