What appealed to me about this necklace was it was made of rocks - one of my favorite things. In this case, the turquoise cabochons and the faceted rubies are not of the best quality, but I like the bold display and the settings and chain are 925 Silver. There are no maker marks that I can find. The design is rather simplistic. Any comments? I find the range of knowledge of the jewelry group to be rather astonishing, so I have high hopes. (I didn't pay that price, I left the sticker so you can see what the seller said.)

I don't see anything in the photos that suggest rubies, best that can be said about them is industrial grade corundum.Crush them to dust and make sandpaper out of the dust.

Hi Kiko.......I don't think that it ruby at all. It just doesn't look right to me. even North Carolina rubies look different then this. I have never seen a ruby that looks like this stone. Also Ruby and Turquoise together isn't something I have seen.....It just doesn't make senseto me to mix the two.... They MAY be......I don't know it all....Maybe @Hollyblue can shed more light on it. It may be another stone found in the same area as Turquoise that would make more sense to me. Whatever it is I DO like it!

Thanks for your positive thoughts about the necklace. If they were even moderate quality rubies, no way I could afford it. I just liked the interplay of colors and the shapes and that they were rocks. The red/pink/beige stones are faceted, which I thought was a nice contrast to the cabochons. I bought this little rock in Nepal which has tiny emerald and ruby bits. Poor quality both but it made me happy.

Those Africa rubies are about the same as North Carolina Rubies.....the green is probably zoisite (sp?) matrix. Those are 6 sided crystal which could cab into star rubies......but still does not match the color of the other stones in the necklace. Holly is probably right that they are Corundum , suitable for abrasives. Corundums are Rubies and sapphires. Red Corundum is called Ruby....All other colors are called Sapphire.
here is a NC star "ruby".
Should probably be properly called a sapphire.

How about these? 400 CT SCOOP NATURAL RUBY ROUGH GEMSTONES LOOSE LOT RAW UNTREATED BROWNISH RED. One man's rubies may be another's sandpaper. [IMG]

North Carolina rubies are nothing like the African rubies in the link, unless you get them from "salted" mines in the Franklin,N.C. area.

I'd just be calling them Random Rock and leaving it at that, but random rock doesn't work as a keyword. I'd run a cheap diamond tester over them and check them against a known sample (I have some junk emeralds handy) and see if they're corundum.

Thank you my dear. But I bought this to wear, not to sell. I don't care if they are rubies or not. I was looking for thoughts like, probably one of a kind, or tourist item from outer Mongolia. :)

And me.:) Turquoise and rhodonite, set in sterling silver.
Kiko, after all the harsh words, here is a rhodonite heart for you:

I can see why you bought the necklace, it has a nice rough feel which gives it a 'rocky' appeal. It could have been made in India, possibly Jaipur.
