I just purchased this basket at an state sale, and am curious as to age. It is a large, sturdy buttocks basket, measuring 25" at base, and standing 20" tall with handle. Cleaning tips? image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg

The braided handle treatment, and plaited Gods Eye are unusual for an older basket.

Some of these do have wrapped handles.... but they're plaited, or simply wrapped.

Your basket looks like white ash , and has a nice size and cover...but no antique age.

here's another braided handle....not as fine as yours...

which is said to be vintage......so the seller has no idea....

with baskets like these the more ribs, the better....

    here's a nice antique one.........

I would suspect your basket is maybe 30 years old , give or take 10 years...
Cleaning dust with a soft brush....is all I would recommend.

Here are a couple of mine.....

I have several from the farm where I was raised that Grandmother used to gather eggs in. She would fill one or two a day. The ones from the farm look like the antique one Komokwa showed and I know that they are at least 50+ years old or older. This is my favorite type of basket.

Eggs would roll around in a pail. Theses baskets held them nicely. I would tag along collecting eggs and putting them in Grandmother's baskets.

I agree with komokwa that your basket looks recent. The photos do not have enough detail to tell for sure, but it might be made of "reed" (the inner core of the rattan vine) rather than wood splint. I am looking particularly at the ribs, which appear to be quite slender and round in cross section. This would be typical of reed. I believe the ribs in traditional wood splint baskets are more flattened, and taper toward the ends where they converge. Reed will have a slightly fuzzy surface, while well prepared wood splint will be smooth. If the basket is made of reed that would confirm a fairly recent date. It is used by many contemporary basket makers as well as in Chinese reproductions of older forms.

The ribs are definitely round. The rest is flat, and appears to be wood. Thank you for the information! I'm learning so much.
