    OMG Kyra, you are amazing! Thats exactly the same, how ever did you find that! I think INH may have a challenger in the search skills :hilarious:That's why mine has a replacement ring on the top as it originally had an extra bit.
    The price....nearly £500......has to be wishful thinking!. I paid £20 for a full jewellery box with this, several bits of silver and Amber.......:jawdrop:

    That's the weirdest thing Barn, there was one of these in the box that I bought too, never occurred to me they were garnets but I did think they were an unusual colour. Awaiting reply with interest so don't apologise for hijacking the thread. I love the twists and turns of information that this forum takes.

    Impossible to tell from a photo,rhodolite garnets are a combination of almadine and pyrope garnet. Without chemical testing it mostly a guess,they were named after the North Carolina rhododendron flowers. https://www.romanticasheville.com/rhododendron_festival.htm

    Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

    @KSW, I don't think it's a mark, but looks like initials where I circled.....maybe a gentle polish????

    That bar brooch looks like dark saphiret to me.

    Is there such a thing? there is no blue undertone in it; that's a reflection from my computer.

    Rather a pyrope garnet with that brownish red hue:)

    INH is an out of reach challenger for search!
    I found it in a shop I explored for victorian tortoise shell earrings....

    Ah, if the blue isn't really there, then not. Yes, I've seen darker saphiret.

    Here you go. Probably just brown glass as I can't see any purple in mine.Pin looks quite long so maybe quite elderly.

    No, it's either dirt or some corrosion. I'll give it a clean and see but I don't think there are any ID marks on it at all.

    @KSW, looks to me based on some of your questions you need a gem tester. Garnets and rock crystal would be an easy ID with a tester :)

    Add a vote for smokey quartz.

    This was just the first, simple write up of the subject I found, but have long heard there is no such thing as smokey topaz.

    There is "root beer"/brown topaz from Guerrero Mexico which does look like many smoky quartz shades.

    That deep colour is topaz here. I've a rather nice ring with it. I'm not seeing cloudy, but I am seeing a bit mucky. ;)
