    Hello!

Had anyone seen a mirror like this before or have any idea on the background? It was my great grandma’s. I have been unsuccessful in my googling search! :(

That's very nice; I like it a lot...and hope the furniture folks will be along soon.

Wonder if it is the top half to a halltree.
Love the Moon and Star. Very unusual.

    Late 1800s.
    Could be American or English.

I'd say that's probably correct, agrees it is unusual, never seen another like it.

I love this. The little hexagonal mirror in the star doesn't magnify by any chance?

I’m not home right now, but I don’t think it does.

It’s finished at the bottom. Is that typical of a hall tree? This thing is solid and HEAVY. It takes two people to lift it.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

That's a BEAUTIFUL take on a Victorian (?) Hall Tree!!! LOVE the unusual Crescent & Star!!! Maybe it was just meant for hats, what with being finished on the bottom! And I love seeing all the design in the woodwork!!!!:):):):) ZZ888 A7F78BA3-E9FE-4E61-A573-9BCF4BDD73BE XXjpg.jpg

It's definitely a hat rack. Being that there are 2 hooks together to hang hats on. One hung to the outside, one hung to the inside. It is also definitely not a coat rack because the pegs would be at the bottom. Now the design is very unique. I see the obvious moon but what everyone is referring to as a star, I see as the sun. The sun and the moon are a common theme in older objects whether its art or something like this in furniture. Someone else would be able to give you a time period that the sun and moon were popular. But the fact the the sun is smaller is just an indication it is the more distant object.

Nice piece! Could be a stand alone piece. Think aesthetic influence, circa 1890.

Very unusual piece, and welcome, Arobda.
Those spindles in odd places always make me think Brittanny, France, but I could be totally wrong. Is there a Breton or French connection in your great-grandma's family?
    That would be the 1880s-90s.

When I first looked at this, it reminded me of a muslim Crescent & 6 point Star of David which is very unusual.

You see it a lot in jewellery of the period, but not much on furniture.

Was just going to reply to Dana that I have seen many early 20th cent lockets with this motif, a pearl or stone set in the star.

    Jewellery collectors think alike?
Yes, it went into the early years of the 20th century as well.

My grandmother had one, with a little opal cab in the star; pearls in the crescent, if I'm remembering.
