Found this at a charity shop the other day - picked it up, and lo and behold there's an info/registration sheet on the base from from an art show/exhibition Charleston South Carolina in 1962. So far coming up with basically nothing(using my google skillz) on the artist name as shown on the sheet "C.M. Isenhour". Anyhow - here she is - just to show her off - and to see if anyone has any better luck finding the artist. Thanks for looking!

    8" tall.

Of course my search was fruitless as well, but heres my thoughts... I think it might have been a student piece, possibly by an african american .I think she is african american, and just beautiful. Id have bought that in a second.Gibbes art gallery is now known as Gibbes museum of art. They focused on local artists quite a bit,so Im betting this is .

Perhaps a student yes, the address is a large house right in the middle of downtown Charleston that is now divided up into apartments.

Well. hmm. I wish I had grand news, but... that show was a bit of a big deal each year and it was a juried show (both entry and awards). Out of 300 submitted works, 55 were chosen for the show.

Sadly, Isenhour's piece did not make it. (there's a newspaper article listing all the accepted pieces).

Beyond that I'm afraid there was not enough info for me to clearly pin down the artist (multiple Isenhours with workable CM names).

I meant to say. From the handwriting, I don't get "student," but rather older adult.

From the piece, I guess no formal art training, but a goodly bit of experience carving.

I would have picked her up for sure.

Thanks much Jivvy! How did you find the info on the art show selections?

There's a newspaper article (paid subscription database) that lists all the accepted pieces and this one was not included.
