Carved agate? Lotus petal? Maybe it didn't start as an ashtray.

I think that is a good possibility.

Stone looks like Jade - or one of the many stones called jade. The bottom metal looks like some of the things Japan did back in the 50s/60s

    Taking that back.

Just noticed the nice floral pattern. Maybe Italy.

Nice Art Nouveau/Rococo vibe to it. I like it.

I agree, a beautiful Chinese lotus leaf brushwasher that has been turned into an ashtray. The stone looks like chalcedony to me.
It will be worth more as a brushwasher, but I suppose the cigarette rest could serve as a brush rest.

Absolutely!!! The brush washer is nicely carved in calcedony :woot:.
It seems a company (?) mounted chinese artefacts (old or newish) in the mid 20th century years for occidentals.
I have a soft translucent stone double peaches with leaves 20190612_110720.jpg 20190612_110648_resized.jpg 20190612_110657_resized.jpg pin dish mounted with beads as feet and a tiny elephant as decor, and have seen this same kind of sloppy mounting on several other pieces in years.

A strange marriage, but much cuter than an ashtray.:) I would have bought that, just for the quirkiness of it.
What, no kyratisation on the missing bead foot? Kyra, are you feeling ok?:nurse:

:hilarious: :shame: Not found convenient bead yet:joyful: and not sure what I want to make with it (I hoped from the bad pics of the listing I may get a jade piece... for 5€...)

I know, it is a gamble which can turn out wonderfully. But 5€ is not bad at all.:)

    I called it an ashtray..It looks like an ashtray....But,it is a brushwasher & I will,from now on, call it a brushwasher!....The rest does work much better with a brush,than a cigarette....Thanks AJ & everyone else,for your help

The way it is now it is definitely an ashtray. The stone, without the metal frame, was once a brushwasher. Brushes would rest on a separate brush rest, like this one:
