Picked this up today as I thought it was curious and I didn’t know what it was made of!. Any ideas?
To begin with I thought some sort of nut or wood but on closer inspection they appear to be a resin of some description. I haven’t looked under a loupe but you can sort of see ‘into’ them and my iPhone light shows through.
Look old but recently strung or restrung as on nylon thread.
    Thankyou :)

This time I can honestly say I have no idea whatsoever. Not gemstone, not natural material. The metal looks like nickel or nickel plate, but beyond that?

    Some sort of pressed resin?

The necklace is Moroccan, but I suspect it is a marriage.
The metal parts were taken from a 1960s Moroccan necklace with half the amount of beads. The domed bead caps should protect either side of each aubergine coloured bead. That means that in between every two beads there are two bead caps, with the domes back to back.
    The metal is base metal.
You can see that there is wear around the beadholes which is not consistent with the construction of the necklace as it is now. They came from a different necklace.
The beads are probably Moroccan as well, they could be our Moroccan favourite, the plastic bucket bead.;) Ingeniously made by melting plastic buckets and colouring and shaping the goo into beads. The colour resembles old cherry amber bakelite.
They did a good job, I like the beads.:)

Of course I can't find the right necklace, but the bead caps were meant like these central beads:

(please ignore the other beads, it is a total mishmash:facepalm:)

What a bizarre choice of beads!
'Right, let's start with some red ones, now spotty, ooh, some white would look good, some silver and of course everyone needs little discs to finish it off'
The red and the chrome caps are cool, a bit like 60s designer chairs!.

I know! Those spotted ones especially! They are nice on Indo-Pacific trade necklaces or something like that, but here?
That is why I didn't put the link in, I didn't want to embarass the proud maker.:sorry:

Your necklace may be slightly incomplete, but it is stylish, in an ethnic way. The maker was sensitive to the look.

Take those beads off that necklace, wrong marriage, should never have been issued a licence.:banghead: When they're off, do the salt water test just to be sure.:)

    Some helpful links:

properties of polyethylene (probably the most common plastic used for buckets):

    Additives may cause different fluorescence.
    density of polyethylene = 0.92-0.96

    density of amber = 1.05-1.1
Amber fluoresces a strong yellowish green to bluish white in short-wave UV light.
