I have acquired these Ilford Special Lantern glass slides, I'm led to believe they are from 1906.

My Dad thinks they depict a story, I think they are just random slides.

    What do you think.?

I'd say random, the original prints are by different artists.

I think they are nicely drawn.

I agree with random, but the person whose brain makes them a story is infinitely more interesting than we are.

I would think there was some narrative behind them. (But not shared.) Being such specific imagery, they wouldn't have a reason to exist without one. Except for the mill house. May very well be a famous landmark somewhere.

There's a bit of a morality theme going on. Slides may have been created independently but someone collected them to convey a message.

Yes, "lessons" as it were. But they range from serious (father reading Bible to family) to satirical (student begging not to be flogged.) Widely differing tone.

I agree Bronwen, other than the building picture the rest appear to be "punishment" type portrayals ... Very nice artwork by the way ... Joy.

Just curious, was your Dad thinking Dickens?

I'm not sure, he sat and went through 400 other slides (glass negatives)

He started to reminisce as he had been to several of the places on them, one of them was a naval base from WWII, he said he had many a happy time there and it was before he met my mother.

I did not want to hear the rest

I think the first one is a political cartoon, but I couldn't pin it down.

Closest I got (about Disraeli as PM):

The first is clearly political - in favor of Jim Crow laws during a period when the South had Black Republican Senators. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_lantern

Likely from the ~1870 era when such animus was at its height in the South during Reconstruction. Black caricature beating obvious intelligent whites, as far as intent goes. Scarce and collectible - but diminished by the damage.

Hum... I don't see Black Americana there at all. To my eye, the adult character is wearing traditional British academic dress.

These are British Ilford Special Lantern, not Magic Lantern

Is that a slide number? 4955? Perhaps a master list of images exists? Or is it a batch number?
