Hi all. I picked up this 10 3/4 by 1 1/4 woven thing, whatever its for, recently and would love some thoughts on it. I think its in fact solid silver,I recognized the Mexican eagle mark, but I also see what I think is "plateador" wich is plated ? Any and all input is appreciated.

Unfortunately, it is plated. I don't see an eagle. ?

The Spanish word for plated (as in silver plated) is plateado.

Given the size of this item, I'd say its likely use is as serving plate or platter for something that needs the depth provided by the sides.

These turn up here regularly. They're always silver plate, if not chromed brass.

    Very pretty, Johnny.
The symbol in the Hecho en Mexico mark doesn't look like the eagle to me. It is probably the manufacturer's mark. It looks to me like two men with wide-brimmed hats sitting in a box, with the one on the left looking over the edge.:wacky: I could be totally off, of course.:)

Thanks so much for chiming in everyone. Heres the best I could do pic wise ,I realized it looks to be double struck hence the slight blurriness. Im sure im beating a dead horse, but I SWEAR this looks like an eagle head to me!

An eagle head was/is often used with 'Hecho en Mexico' marks, labels, etc. - it's not a silver mark...

Ah, not two men in a box.:wacky:

To my knowledge the silver mark was an entire eagle, not a head.

Update on this item,it was in fact 925 silver. I took it to my scrap guy and he put it into his machine . I was as surprised as the next man !

Not sure if the 'machine' is an XRF spectrometer, but good as they are, even the most pricey of units must be carefully calibrated, and can give false/incorrect results on plated items, sometimes still requiring scraping and/or testing the surface in several different places. Would really have to wonder why any maker would mark solid silver as plated rather than marking it '925' or 'sterling'...

Yep. I said to him point blank "Are you sure its silver?" and he assured me it was.Perhaps he collected that style and wanted it ? I just took the money and left. :) Hes been in the biz for decades,so one has to assume he knows what hes doing.
