Since I showed this on the finds thread, I might as well ask what it is. It looks to be the same style as a piece OBB posted. I thought this was glass, but those bits appear to be stone. I have no idea how old it may be, or even how I got it. It just looked cool. The bale is stamped 925; that's the only mark. It's 1 1/8" long.

Looks a bit like a chrysalis hanging there.

Carnelian. Certainly in the style of my Victorian bracelet, but I suspect a little later with that 925 mark.

@Ownedbybear please show the bracelet here as it gives a larger view of what's under discussion.

Does this belong under the "healing crystal" umbrella? Gems and semi-precious stones (among other things) have had such properties ascribed to them for millennia.

Carnelian/cornelian (basically orange chalcedony) shaped to look like a crystal point, but not a naturally grown crystal.

My kids had a teen-aged babysitter in the early 1990's who used to wear a bunch of these (all different colored stones + clear crystal) on a chain around her neck.

I know that at that time, you could buy them at crafts shows, but I'm not sure where else.

Hobbyist and crafters were using actual crystals with caps in the late 70's and early 80's.With the New Age craze many of the pieces were made in India and China cutting different stones into crystal shapes. Lapidary Journal was first published 70 years ago with stone digging locations and clubs reports about the locations. They usually had instructions for making a couple jewelry projects in each issue.

As readers interest changed they focused on the beading craze and now have Jewelry Artist format which has instructions, etc. https://www.google.com/search?q=lapidary+journal&client=firefox-b-1-d&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=sTb7X9T1DYeSGM%2C0Ps5dGZYhyIJ9M%2C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kRONXxA3-AJ4brIlqeu20eHCyheHQ&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi69_GroobjAhWUX80KHThSBtsQ_h0wDnoECA0QBg&biw=1505&bih=891#imgrc=_&vet=1

Many of these were made in India. Very much New age associated.
Yes, and yes. Most semi-precious and precious stones can be used for healing. A natural crystal is deemed best because the energy is said to be directed towards the point and concentrated there. Some people say artificially shaped (cut) stones lose much of their power.
We used to have a parcel delivery man who wore those, all chakra colours in natural stone together on a leather cord. He had a sideline in aromatherapy products.

I am aware that this is not a natural crystal, but it's a very consistent color with a nice translucency. Would it be dyed?

I like the visual effect. The bracelet OBB has is very nice. For some reason they make me think of those Chinese sewing baskets with the Peking glass rings, beads, coins, etc.

    How random is that?:hilarious:.
Not only that he has a sideline in aromatherapy products but also that he hung around long enough to tell you!. Our delivery men sling the parcel in the vague vicinity of the postcode whilst speeding through like an F1 driver:rolleyes:

I don't think so, carnelian often has a very even colouring. Carnelian has a very special look, I think.
:D That was about ten years ago. Things are faster nowadays, although they still deliver it to you in person. Some still chat occasionally, if they speak Dutch that is. Most are fairly recent arrivals to the country, and this is a job they can do without having to be able to speak the language. Our current delivery guy is a very cheerful Somali who speaks a little Dutch.

I think it's fine for carnelian.

aj, we have several lovely Somali neighbours. One, works as a carer, has the goal that ALL her children will go to uni. The eldest has just done her masters in clinical oncology, two more are reading psychology and engineering respectively. Mother works all the hours god sends for minimum wage.

We have several Somalis around here too. We live on a business estate, but across the road is a very international neighbourhood, so we have a healthy mix of nationalities on our doorstep.;)
In this part of the Netherlands people tend to greet each other when they pass in the street. Some newcomers can be a bit wary, but after a while they learn to say the usual phrase 'hello neighbour' with a smile. It helps them fit in.

I do that! Say hello, I mean. And I've neighbours who are keen to improve their English, and really like nattering when I'm in my front garden.

When we are outside there are usually some people who come over for a chat. Most don't know much Dutch, but at least they try.
Sometimes people are a bit too withdrawn to even say hello, and I just give them a big smile. You never know what they went through before they came here, I want them to feel acknowledged and welcome, in my own little way.

That's one reason I do it - and that small thing can have such a huge impact on a life.
