hey folks, picked this up a while ago in a charity shop nik nak pile, looked interesting

definetly a stone (cold, cold), but dont know if it is some some old primitive stone carving, or just been formed that way,

or made to look that way;)

does seem to have some uniformity

cant even decide what stone it could be,

    any help appreciated

I don't know what it is but even though it looks like an old worn owl, I wonder if it's a beetle/insect fossil. shrug emoji smal purple.jpg

There's too much bilateral symmetry for me to think it was created entirely by nature. Amber would not be cold, cold.

Are the lighter places something that has become caught in pits & crevices? Or are we seeing underlying material?
Trilobite fossil? When I said 'not natural', I had in mind a strictly mineral formation, but fossilized organic material definitely possible. A 'cheekless' specimen?

Hi bronwen, thanks for the info

The lighter patches are a clay type material stuck in crevices, easily removable

Looks like an owl to me as well. Some kind of amulet? It's very interesting.

Looks really, really old, I would get it checked out.
What if it’s an Egyptian scarab? You’ll want to know in case it comes alive at night!

To the extent I can see it, I'm not spotting the dullness/roughness I would expect if anything had snapped off that edge. Isn't it fairly smooth all over, discounting the pits, etc.?

o yeah, if it broke off it broke off many years ago, its dead smooth
