saucer or vide-poche ?

    Well, it is not a saucer, so it must be a vide-poche, whatever that is.

    it's a special thing really. sometimes wrongly translated as coin tray (or the worst I ever read - needle tray; go figure...)
    whatever small stuff you have in your pockets is thrown in at the end of the day.
    vide/empty, poche/pocket

    The translation was simple, but the concept I had difficulty with. It is about half a metre too small for my pockets, anyway. I usually look as if I am fitted with panniers or pack horse baskets.

    LOL! Glad to know there is an actual name for this! I always have one in my guest room. They are decorative, but also useful as all get out!

    I have a couple of pottery pieces that look somewhat like the one posted. My great aunt made them, probably somewhere between 1900 and 1940.

    I always thought of them as dishes for candy or canapes.
