Featured 1850s monogrammed snuff box help

hi folks, found this lovely snuff box today

has a silver inlay, john hill 1854 middlesbro

i got it for under a fiver because of the damage,

was wondering what it was made of

seems to be wood with a veneer of some kind

any thought appreciated

 

Gorgeous! The plaque looks like silver.
The veneer some kind of lacquer rather than actual veneer, I think.

i found one before and it turned out to be papier mache, but this feels a heavier, thick wood

 

I considered papier maché, but I agree, this one could be wood.

 

looks like some type of burl wood...????
& isn't that kinda big for snuff ???

You reckon it could be an easy enough repair ?

 

I was also thinking burr walnut. The wood can be cut very thinly and has a very attractive grain.

 

repair is beyond my purview & above my pay grade in this matter !!!

 

I think some kind of faux painted pressed wood or paper material. Believe it to be painted to mimic tortoise shell. Not sure what all the squiggles are about.

is it possible that the top is one thing, and sides and bottom are another ?

 

That is what I meant with some kind of lacquer. A bit like Vernis Martin, but with painted swirls.
