    Hey

I do not have ANY and i mean any knowledge about old jewelry, but somebody send me some pictures of this gorgeous necklace and i must say that i am intrigued. He wants to sell it to me and claims that it is veeery old... i dont know it may be it is from 50s and the guy think that this is very old?
He claims that it has rubies and it is made of gold, but other than that he didn't say much else... So is it worth to buy it? For how much ? And is it really that old?

It is beautiful, but i really do not need another missed buy :D so thanks to anyone who will help!

Ask him to show you whatever marks are on the pieces. If it's gold, I think there should be several marks in different places - purity marks, control marks, maker's mark, etc.

I do like the look of it, but would want more pics of it to warrant a purchase, and how much does he want for it ?

We need to see a pic of the back for a start, marks/clasp etc

    He claims,,,,
    He thinks....
    He wants to sell.....

That may be a way to sell .....but it's no way to buy gold and ruby jewelry !!!!

it's lovely , & the enamel is nice....but there is no way to tell if it's gold...or rubies...or what it weighs , or if there are any marks.......

    If it's real , I would expect to see it in a fine auction....for $2000 to $4000 .

Just by the way the stones look and how they are set makes me think it's something a bit tasty

That's only as an interested observation though

It is gorgeous, but as the others said, ask him for more information and photos of clasp, back, and possible marks.

Who is the seller? A friend, a dealer? If a dealer , what does he usually sell?

I would ask him if he had the stones tested. If not, and he has no documentation (original receipt, appraisal), then he is guessing they are rubies. If he is going by family history, that is not proof, stories are distorted over time.

If it is marked gold that is in favor of them being rubies, but it is not proof.

    That said, it is LOVELY!!!!!!!

i will ask the guy for more pictures... the thing is that where i am are not a lot antique business, so i frequently get that kind of mails where people ask me if i will like to buy something from them...that is how i got saint Andrew and some other cool stuff...but the thing is that i usualy dont buy antique jewelery...

and ok with missed buys i did just think of things that i thought that would be something and in the end there just wasn't that... i do understand that this is just how this works in antique world :D

oh and that guy didnt just send me this necklace but also some pictures on the glass, but ok that is maybe for another post..

    kyratango Bug jewellery addiction!

:woot:I see a gorgeous 1830s enamel gold and rubies (maybe foiled to enhance the color), it may be French, definitely ask for pics of the clasp (tongue in flat box, usually the tiny French marks should be on the tongue).
These are very light weight, the value is in the age and condition... I’d catch it in the area 400€-600€.:)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Pareidolia? It came up last week in a discussion.

What she and everyone else said. The back may tell a whole different story from the front.

    I also thought possibly French.
It looks like that French style enamel, which is also found in Belgium and Dutch Brabant. @Dessert58 's gorgeous Antwerp(?) earrings also have the same shade blue enamel.

i thought of something because of kyratango post... he labeled the pictures "napoleon"... maybe this mean that it is french? But i will have to ask him
