Appears to have been established in 1904

However, in another article, it is mentioned that they failed to open in 1906. See this quote. "When the Peoria Steel and Tool Company, with land located adjacent to the Herschel plant, failed to open operations in 1906, Herschel acquired their newly constructed plant that consisted of five buildings and opened their own plant."

    Seems an awfully short life.

The only issue is the patents are 1902 & 1903. Would they have acquired the patents before opening?

The patents may have been issued to someone else and then assigned to the company.

Or they patented their vise and then started to manufacture it, but it didn't go well. Great research @Bakersgma !

Well, I believe I found the patent but nothing about J.R. Long or the company. But it's something. 20190724_061544.jpg

The Peoria Steel & Tool Co. Purchased the automatic vise and tool company and all related patents from John Reeves Long of Akron, OH in 1905 because they wanted to mass produce one of his vises. Which explains the earlier date

Looks like three companies merged together to create the Peoria Steel and Tool Co. They acquired land in East Peoria, but never moved there. One of the merged companies was the Automatic Vise Company. I am guessing the Automatic Vise Co. simply began making their vises under the new Peoria name.

I've inherited one of these vises as well. I plan to pull it apart and repaint it red.

I read the article you linked to. The city of East Peoria and its residents put up $37,000.00 to buy stock and get the plant built there. They built the plant and then leased it out to someone else. Very sneaky!! Probably kept the existing factories where they were already located in the various cities.
