It's brass but not heavy. About 6" high. It has a very snug fitting lid, holding tobacco? Really well made and that nipple!!! IMG_5197.JPG IMG_5199.JPG IMG_5200.JPG IMG_5201.JPG IMG_5202.JPG IMG_5204.JPG IMG_5206.JPG IMG_5205.JPG

Funny description, carolgal! Indeed the lid is... evocative:joyful:
The snug fitting suit perfectly for humidity control of the stored stuff, so, tobacco jar is probable:)

These weren't tobacco, I've had them. A white china insert typically, and used for clotted cream or butter. The ones I've had were inscribed accordingly.

Thanks Bear, you are right, the little insert. I didn't think of that. Saved! Could be used as is the way to go, cheers

Didn't I have something similar on here about 5 years ago, ?
Found out it was for hanging from roof/bulkhead in the galley/kitchen of a ship/trawler
Forget what it was for holding.

Yes, that would certainly explain the tight fit, motion and banging around, delighted with that:happy:

Making my day to know this and advertise it correctly. If I had the insert I would keep it to keep my scrambled eggs warm for a fry, would love putting it on the table for guests, off on a flight of fancy now, thanks very much for looking it up Jivvy:shame:

That's interesting! I've certainly had them with cream or butter engraved, so presumably they were sold for many purposes. ;)

If the insert is insulating it could be used for hot or cold eh?
