K, is the white branch thingie, lower right, coral or faux coral? And what is it attached too?

 

Now that I've looked at some photos online I think perhaps they are George V and Mary (ruled 1910-1936) instead of Edward VII and Alexandra. I'm not an expert, though.

 

I really don't know if it's real or fake M. I've looked under a loupe and it's very difficult to say especially as I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for. What I can see are some longitudinal striations when I shine a bright light on it and look through the loupe. Do I remember there is a test using lemon juice or did I imagine that?
There is just a gold ring at the top. Unmarked so don't know if it's real gold.Its about an inch long. If it's real coral does it have a value?.

 

In coronation photos the crowns are larger/taller and more elaborate than these. So may not be coronation, unless they swapped out different crowns for different photos at the same event.

 

You could well be right as it would be logical it was celebrating a royal wedding rather than a coronation as they are both in the picture. So that would date it to 1918?

 

Could be. Good idea though.I think it will now head for the bathroom to replace the one that's there.

My first take is that the carving is too crude for Whitby Jet.

Theirs is in much better nick than mine but great to see it how it should be. Frustrating that the price disappears as soon as it's sold on Etsy. I will test it although I've only got the baking powder not Simichrome.

I agree, which was why my first impression was vulcanite. Then when I googled it I couldn't find any vulcanite ones that looked this style. They are all the cuff ones with a vulcanite decorated motif. The only ones I found with all round carving were said to be Jet.

The yellow beads look like satin glass beads to me, very nice!

The more I think about it, wouldn't a coronation just have George in it?. I think it's a most likely a royal wedding one but who knows. It's on named backing paper but I'm not sure it is contemporary to the brooch. I'll get a pic.

Coronation items freqently have both monarchs in them: after all, the queen gets crowned as well.
