I was hoping someone can help me out with this basket. I thought it had some age to it BWDIK.

It is 11 1/4" to the top of the handle, 9 1/4" across the top & is 3 1/2" to the side edge.

Interesting basket. The splints and weaving skeins are wood (rather than cane) although I can't tell what type, and look like they are hand split (irregular in dimensions), which may indicate "some age".

Here is a somewhat similar one:

The double hoops on the sides of the op's seem a bit unusual. If it was made as a drying basket, it seems you would not want to block air flow with high sides. But it may have been adapted for some other use.

John Irwin, in "Baskets and Basket Makers in Southern Appalachia", says similar "flat basket drying trays were considered rather common in the northeastern part of the country", but not as common in the area he was studying. The one he illustrates has low sides.

Finally got around to selling this basket.:happy:

The seller messaged me to say how happy she was with her purchase & was thrilled to add it to her collection. :joyful::joyful:

She confirmed it was definitely an Appalachian basket from the 1950's to 1960's based on the patina & construction. This shape is called a pie basket, but this one is unique because of the way it is woven & is deeper than most.
