Featured Newspaper Mirror (has anybody seen this one before?)

This is something from my family that I've had amongst my antiques.

This Winnipeg Tribune Mirror used to hang in my Great Grandparents grocery and confectionary store. The store was in operation from the early 1920's till it closed in 1965. (This mirror sat in the closed store/building for quite some time till one day I rescued it)

The Winnipeg Tribune was a paper was in business from 1890 to 1980.

I don't have an exact year for this mirror, but I believe it may be from the mid to late 1920's. I have been to many antique shops, and have surfed on line for many years, and have not come accross another one to this day. Just curious if someone on Antiquers has either seen this before, or may be able to date it to an era from the photo I took.

I can't say anything about Winnepeg Tribune collectible values, but it has good cross collectible attributes.

The double entendre mirror slogan on a handsome vintage (antique?) mirror is something literary and journalistic collectors would love

And of course, free pressers

 

Thank you, yes I did rescue the mirror myself and some Coca Cola signs and bottles, along with a salada tea sign (the coke & salada were the old enamel signs, plus some cigarette artifacts such as a Players Cigarette door advert with sandpaper on it to strike a match on, there was even an old water bath style coke vending machine, but unfortunately the building was broken into & that item was stolen). Some of those other items have left my collection and gifted to other family members, but I have hung on to the mirror.

 

I don't know if that tag line, "Mirrors the ..." was a promotional tag to go with the mirror motif, or if it was a company tag. If the former, could have been a very low run advertising piece, hence why you have not seen one.

From here, it looks like a sign painter painted it, but if I had it in front of me, I may think silk screen with the shadows on the red added after by hand.

What are the dimensions?

 

@sabre123 the dimensions of the mirror are 7 inches height, 17 inches long and not quite an inch wide.

 

I've looked through a number of front pages of the Winnipeg Tribune through the years and have not seen any with that tag line. I've also seen other promotional pieces that do not use it.

So, I believe this was a low-run ad campaign type of 'sign.'

As seen in this image high atop my kitchen, it will remain a fitting fixture amongst some of my other antique items in my collection throughout my home. Whenever I look up at it, I think about my Great Grandparent’s, family and their store.

 

Well, I suspect your great grandparents sold the paper at their store or had a newsstand there. I think this is a promotional piece that would’ve been given to stores or places that sold paper much like the Coke and Salada tea signs. (Was Salada tea sold only in Canada? Brings back some memories.)

 

I like that it brings back memories for people, that's sometimes/most times what it's all about!

As for Salada Tea, I think it was a Canadian thing, much like Red Rose Tea was.

 

I remember Salada in New York in the 50;s.

 

I still use Red Rose Tea .. have for 55 yrs . In England my Mother used Typhoo Tea {leaves} , you can get it in Canada but even though we drank that tea in England it no longer agrees with me, LOVE RED ROSE !! ... Joy.

 

Yes @Bakersgma, I did some checking on the web out of curiosity and found Salada Tea was founded in Montreal 1892, it is sold in both Canada and the U.S. Any chance I get to look up history, I'm in my element lol

 

Hagood Hardy’s song, The Homecoming was used on Salada tea ads. Pretty song.
