good quality. the gorget patches seem to be Luftwaffe. on the third from top you see Hermann Hesse to the left explaining the plot of Journey to the East.

 

Several people have identified the planes as HE-111s

I have been thinking about doing a livestream how I go about my scanning work, and generally just streaming negatives from WWII and perhaps at one point a few glass negatives. This may be cool to see for those who are interested.

I think youtube would be the best platform? Starting 15:00 CEST (Netherlands, UTC +2)

 

when they are of such good quality I'd ask an editor like Taschen.

 

Nice pictures I'm very into WW2 at the moment and I've been learning a lot about how life was for people back then and not just WW2 but the 40s in general, I'm building myself up a nice collection of relics from the war mainly from WW2 and quite a few bits of A.R.P stuff as well. I'm looking for a WW2 helmet and a WW2 gas mask and a WW2 axe would be nice too.

Sorry its taking so long. I have really been thinking, and I hate cutting up the negatives to put in my glass Coolscan 8000 holder. It makes handling and archiving more difficult, not to mention risking accidentally cutting off the edge of a 35mm frame. The glass holder adds dust, and its a really slow process to insert and align the negatives. Some want to curl very badly.

Unfortunately there are few film scanners that can take complete uncut rolls.. I've decided to get an RPS 7200. If it doesn't work out, I can always resell it for roughly the same amount. With a practical resolution of 3200 DPI (As per filmscanner.info) I'm confident we won't miss out on any details versus the 4000 DPI of the coolscan 8000.

Hopefully the scanner is clean inside. I'll keep you guys updated.

Unfortunately there appears to be horizontal banding on some rolls, but not others. I think this depends on the density of the negative. Very dense or faint negatives may introduce banding.

I do not know why this suddenly appeared, while not on the two previous rolls. Scanning one of the previous rolls to test appears to show no banding.




I guess there is no perfect scanner in existence, and I may have to go back to my coolscan 8000. Will try the scanner on my laptop to see if it changes anything.

 

were the films stored away correctly ? vertical lines I've seen on rolls that started to become brittle.
do you know under what circumstances the negatives were developped ?

 

The lines are purely a scanner artifact. Trying things out with a laptop made no difference. It also occurs on my own negatives. Guess I have to start saving up for an Reflecta RPS 10

The film wants to curl into a roll heavily, but none of the rolls show a brittle emulsion or base. Most of the film was stored uncut and rolled up in their canisters. Some rolls were already cut up to lengths of several frames, a few single images. By the auctioneer I think to take example photos.

Is there a way to clean mold off the emulsion side of a film? This is especially prevelant in one roll.

I reached out to the seller on eBay (They are an auction house or Wearhouse I think) for more info on the history of the film. I also linked to my work on them so far. Unfortunately I got no response.

I'll see if I can contact a professional photographer that still makes b/w when I'm in the city. she may know if there's a fluid to freshen the films up. not sure though if she's still around or closed her shop.

Reflecta RPS 10m purchased for normal prize, arrived and clearly already used before ... was nowhere in description at video/photography web store.

The problem with this, and I have noticed with all scanners in the meantime, is that the film must be flat to get the entire scan sharp. Scans with the RPS 10m are rarely sharp everywhere, even with new film with my own photo. Sometimes the focus range of the scanner is not large enough to get the centre sharp.

It seems worse than my RPS 7200, but that will be due to the higher resolution. There are also weird artifacts ...
Worthless ... scanner goes back.


What now? there are a few options:

1. I can try to modify one of my scanners to accept rolls, maybe my Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III?

2. I can go back to the old ways and use my glass holder with Nikon Coolscan 8000, this always ensures flat film! but the more things against the film = the more dust, and then I have to cut the film.

2. I completely distance myself from scanners and make a DSLR 'scanner' setup with my Nikon D610. For this, the DigitaLIZA 35mm holder seems the cheapest and best option? The Film Carrier MK1 + Pro Mount MK2 also seems a good option, but it costs a lot more.
Lenses I don't know, maybe a Nikkor 60mm AF-D Micro? I will have to purchase a macro lens for this.

My idea is that I can: 1. Use the lens aperture to get everything sharp. 2. Maybe I can use the glass holder, but I don't know if AN-glass will be visible in the photos?
It is all something to think about ...
