Featured Help Identifying Piece...please

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to date and just figure out what style of furniture this piece is. The piece was acquired from someone who was getting rid of it. My understanding is that they got it from their grandparents. We're in the tri-state area if that helps. Any insight into date, type of furniture, wood type, etc. would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

 

Hello! It's a "Refectory" table, renaissance revival style, popular in the 15th - 17th centuries. Yours is a 20th century revival table, machine built.

When you say tri state, NY, NJ, Conn?
In modern terms these tables are sometimes referred to as a "banquet" table.

Yeah, i don't doubt it, they tend to be quite large & nothing folds or tucks away for storing so unless you are in a monastery or castle (where they were developed originally back in the day) they do take up a lot of room.

 

NJ specifically. Is it worth having appraised? We were considering refinishing it but I was hesitant if its considered an antique. I dont want to ruin it but the top is in rough shape.

 

IMO, no, appraisal is not needed, value would be in low hundreds, guesses $200-$300. It's probably not antique, i would guess 1930s- 1940s or so and if your plan is to keep it by all means, refinish/restore the top. It will increase it's value which would not be much these days due to it's size. How long is it?

James has provided excellent information. Only thing to add is that it is mahogany. Likely came from some kind of institutional setting but possibly from a very grand large home.

Not at all. These are what I would consider institutional settings.

 

The table is about 64in long and 30in wide. It's a beautiful heavy piece. I'm going to try and clean it up to see how big of a task fully refinishing will be. Thank you everyone for all of the information!

 

I would have thought quite a bit longer based on the picture. This is not particularly long for a home setting.

 

Me too, it does look longer, that helps value in my view, the smaller the better for a table like this.

GOOD LUCK! on refinishing your table, you might try one one those restore a finish products first like Howard, some swear by it, much less work.
