Lane end table serial # 558020

The answer to your "is this an antique" question is no. An antique would be at least 100 years old - and this table looks like it was made in about the 1940's.

Thank you! And I should hold on to it and not paint it right? That’s what I was going to do and then saw the serial number and thought I should see if I should paint this or not.

Apparently, Lane pretty much did just cedar chests through their early years. In 1951, they released a collection of 40 occasional tables and expanded from there.
I do see MCM styling in your table and think it would greatly benefit from refinishing.

Lane serial numbers are actually the date of manufacture, backwards.

I would have thought this a bit later based on styling but the number doesn't lie. Can find no other examples of this style in a quick search. Would think that, if this were a sought-after style, one would find them on-line. Think it a bit fussy for the MCM crowd so see no harm in painting this one. This is not to say that it might not look great refinished. Just think painting would be no great loss if that is your preference.
