Wife was shipping two large 18th C. cannons from auction house in MA to her warehouse in VA. Freight carrier had them in a semi-trailer with other cargo when they got to our area, driver wanted to deliver other pallets to a local Army base before delivering our stuff. All trucks delivering to the base have to let explosive-sniffing dogs inside the trailer. Dog ran straight for our two identical cannons and sat down, meaning he detected explosives. I can guarantee neither cannon had been fired in over 150 years so those dogs have very good noses! The MP's told the driver he couldn't enter the base with the cannons, so he came to the warehouse and we took them off.

One of the pair, other was lot 13.

Minute traces of gun powder can be detected by a dog after years.
I was told hypothetically if you ran across a field and right after, an ice age occurred, your scent would still be detectable by a dog 2000 years later.
Whilst the moggy is lolling in front of an open fire
