It sure would be nice if the pictures were (or could be made) bigger.

Makes you wonder what happened that he ended up back on the farm when he was obviously talented and had studied in major cities? beautiful painting.

Great job Jivvy. I find it amazing that he did this from memory. No photographs, no sketches.

'[T]hen for a season in his teens he studied cartooning at the Cleveland art institute.' And 'had shows in Chicago and New York City.' Appears largely self taught, all the more impressive.

Clarence Lukingbeal, you're not going to find too many with that name.

It's fun to have an easy one tossed in with all the rest (occasionally). :joyful:

Johnny, I can probably answer that for you. C A Lukingbeal was my grandfather. He raised five children on the farm and put them all through college. He was actually a very good farmer whose primary obligation was putting food on the table for the family through the lean years of the Great Depression. Many of us aspire to be great artists, novelists, actors, rock musicians, and professional athletes, but only a very small percentage of even the most talented of us are able to make even a part time living at it. Steve Lukingbeal.

Welcome to the Forum, Steve! :)

You must be proud to have such a dedicated and talented Grandfather.
Yes, times were different then and even harder to provide for family and manage to pursue his talent.
Thank you for joining to fill in some of the blanks! :)
