    Hi everyone

I'm hoping find the maker of this desk, when it was made, and what type of wood it is made of. Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to help me!

The drawer pulls resemble Lane, but I'm sure could have been used by other manufacturers too. Have you checked inside and outside of all drawers and on the back of the desk?

Other than the pull or 2 that aren't attached, its looks to be in darn good shape. I don't think it's terribly told.

    Agrees, probably late 20th century.
The drawer pulls are Hepplewhite bail pulls, popular in USA during the federal period.

Yes I did, and I didn't find any markings that indicated who made it.

Thank you! Do you know if there is a term for the gold detailing trim on the top of the desk?

    Walnut or cherry.

    How about "gilt trim."

Also, is that a knob in the desktop surface?

Nice quality repro of a mid 19th Victorian desk. I've got an original. ;)

There's a proper term for that gilded leather border but my brain won't retrieve it. Embossed is what it is, anyhow.

Ok thanks! Yes that is a knob. I took it off because I need to find two matches to it since the desk is missing them.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Reading about the treatment of leather, it appears that embossing is when the imprints are raised above the surface, and debossing it when the imprint is pushed down into the surface. According to what I've seen online, the leather padded tops on desks are done with the debossing method, but everybody calls it embossing anyway. :)

"Debossing." I learned a new word!

OK, thanks for clearing that up....:)

Neither did I; learned something new from the Internet again! I found a really rambling blog post about it but decided not to post a link to it since you had to go 2/3 of the way down before the information showed up.
