At the antiques fair there is a lovely lady who sells textiles and often has little bargains in her £2 pile
Possibly a brush handle but surprising that such a beautiful thing could be for such a mundane purpose! c2.5” tall.
    So…
    1) Brush handle or something else? @Any Jewelry right up your street?
    2) I thought Iv0ry, she says bone (as she would) but looking at the parallel lines they don’t look like Schraeger lines but could it have been cut from a different angle. It doesn’t feel like celluloid.
The carving is outstanding, a skilled hand has made this if it is carved. The photos don’t do it justice.
on Google I delved into what walrus fang looked like in cross section but couldn’t find anything decisive.
    3)Age and origin
    4) what type of flowers are they? Again google failed me so I need a tame botanist @Ownedbybear please help!
    5) How do I clean it? Do I remove the string from the bottom or leave it?
    So many questions!
Thankyou so much if you have made it this far!
    Edit- photos won’t load…..as you were….

Lily of the Valley? And what size is this? Haven't a clue what all that ropery at the bottom contained, but I'd lop it all off and call it a statue! Charming!

Wonder if it's not a parasol finial.

Yes! That’s what it is! Thankyou

Could well be! That’s a great suggestion.

My initial thought was Umbrella handle.

I can't be sure (your pics are really good, though) but could the material be marine ivory? In some of those pics I seem to see cracked ice, as in Walrus tooth.

I would certainly think a natural material rather than manmade.

Lovely lily of the valley, convollaria majalis. That's a very pretty thing that is. I adore lily of the valley, too.

Thanks everyone. I’ve been laid low with a horrid cold but I’ll cut off the stringy stuff and take some more photos tomorrow for size etc. I think it’s too small to be a parasol handle, the finial seems more likely.
Off to bed to try to beat the bug :meh::android:

Not saying it is, but it resembles an Indian Mughal fly whisk.
    Could be African too.

Most had horse hair but some African ones had hemp twine.

Shoo, bugs! The two-legged petri dishes strike again? It's definitely not bone, but not elephant ivory either. And not artificial. Walrus tusk or whale tooth sounds about as good as any.

I find the appearance to be completely consistent with elephant ivory.

A charming Spring motif and one that is designed to be presented upright.
