Just picked up this set of beads. I initially thought they were just wood, but they have a translucent glow about them. Maybe they are amber. I have tried my ultra violet torch on them but the batteries are a bit low. I will have another bash with fresh batteries when I get home.

The blue diffuse effect you see on amber when you shine UV on it.

Okay. Here we are with a bit more juice. Not sure if this is the effect we are looking for?

I was thinking water buffalo horn. The color and the crack lines are dead on.

I was gonna ask about veil...but OP had done it an' I hadn't read the thread far enough to notice.
Asleep at th' switch, as usual...sigh.

That's where I was, too. The cracking, especially, points there.

Cannot help much, just wondering, isn't bone (horn is bone, right?) noticeably heavier than wood and amber? While wood and amber are similar to each other by weight per volume.
Otherwise I have never seen such cracks or line patterns on amber. But I am no expert.

It's heavier than amber, but most things are. Horn is keratin, like really thick fingernails.

    Thanks, evelyb30, for the explanation.
Because the first suggestion mentioned by Chinoiserie was wood, so I suppose the necklace is light, and then the glowing excluded wood and pointed to amber. From my experience wood and amber are similar as weight per volume.
I personally don't think it is amber and have no idea what water buffalo horn looks like. Just wondering if weight can be used as a clue.

Thanks everyone. Always interesting learning new stuff in here. So would the horn float or sink in water then?

No idea. It might depend on the piece of horn.

Me too. The lines in them suggests this I.e. something growing in layers.

I believe Rhinoceros "horn" is actually a matted hair...pretty much the same material, but very fibrous.
I wholly agree with your concern, komo...but these don't appear to be rhino.
