Featured F. Alvarez Mid Century Woodcut of a Man Carrying Buckets

This is also a thrift store find from last week. I really like the image on this one, Mid Century woodcuts are my favorite thing to collect. I could use a little help figuring out the artist, it is not one I have run across before. The technique is interesting in that it appears that the entire paper was printed with gold ink and some texture, then the black. I am guessing by the frame sort of 50's-60's time frame. Nothing really useful on the back, just a small colored sticker. All feedback appreciated. Sorry the photos aren't that great, I was having trouble finding good light.

 

Artist Francisco Alvarez's signature seems to be a match.

 

Red & blue sticker looks 1970s for what it's worth. Here's another F. Alvarez work. Signature does look like match.

Thanks! That looks like the right artist. I was going to guess Mexico, but Spain makes sense. I like his other prints too, I was able to find few more examples.

Scene doesn't look particularly Spanish (although this one does.) Born 1936 so we're probably talking 1960s earliest.

Ah. So apparently he was one of the members of the Spanish art movement Estampa Popular working in the 1970s. Anti-franquitas (as well they should be.) You'll have to run this through Google Translate.

This is probably more than you want to know but... Here's a doctoral thesis done by a student at Madrid's Complutense University on Estampa Popular. You'll have to run it through Google Translate. The movement seems to have been widespread through the country with regional groups composed of numerous members. I can't find mention of Fernando Álvarez in the body but she does mention him among her list of interviewees.
