The treasures are out there even if they are pretty ugly!
This was in a basket of ladies tights in a charity shop. I didn’t even stop to look to see if there was a hallmark as the metal was screaming at me that it was gold. At £1.50 I dug deep and took my chance. And ran!
The only mark I can find is a 750 in a lozenge, no makers mark or date letter. Is this normal?
It’s quite big and at 11g seems a lot of 18k gold to put a piece of not beautiful glass into
I’ve seen some of the big chunky rings with the fake 750 but this does test 18k on a stone although I’m not going to spoil it by filing it to be absolutely sure.
I’m presuming the green is glass, sort of looks like the Italian canes cut a bit oddly. It’s definitely a bit different….
Anyone seen anything like it before?
    Thankyou :)

    Blimey !

Did it have a price tag, or perhaps fell off someone's finger ?

I never find anything good rifling through the ladies undergarment section :playful::)

I'd bet that too. I have an 18K ring with a glass intaglio of an owl. Think it & others with it were being offered as Italian & Murano. This was a store that presumably knew where its inventory came from, not a seller who inherited it from great aunt Tillie.

Thirded - Italian with Murano glass. They just didn't bother with the full mark.

Surely the donor would be appalled to learn how little they got for it. But good on you for excavating it.

Ah blast, you’ve activated my guilt now
I’ll give them a donation when I’ve rehomed it. I’ve done that before when I’ve got a seriously good deal.

Sounds an excellent arrangement. Wonder if it got in with the tights when someone else who had already snagged it along with a bunch of other stuff dropped it & didn't notice.

Nah. It was waiting just for you. What's the ring size?

    Flaming hell.

I think what you have there is actually quite ancient Italian glass. Not as in modern ish Murano but mediaeval or older, set in a newer gold setting.

    Really?! :jawdrop:
What indicates that it’s that old?
It would explain why a piece of glass ended up in an 18k setting I suppose.
Maybe it’s not quite so ugly after all!

Makes total sense. Most modern glass is set in 800 silver, if it's in precious metal at all.

I’m surprised they went for a ring which is quite likely to get knocked. A pendant may have been a safer option for it?.
@Ownedbybear if that’s what it is, does that make it unusual or add to its value? or is it scrap value plus a talking point?
Don’t worry I’m not going to scrap it.
Other than our esteemed experts here (you ) is it worth having the glass further evaluated, there must be a FB group for ancient glass.
This is fascinating! I’ve been reading about the romans using cane glass in bowls and some of it is stunning :jawdrop:

The look of it, the rather muted colour and that green, the early look to the canes. The way they’re set. And the west, that’s centuries, you can’t reproduce it. You’ve some decent museums with Roman stuff near you, might be worth a visit.

I so could not sell that.

Asking a group for antique glass would help!

Yes, the Corinium Museum in Cirencester. They may be worth a visit or may be able to point me in the right direction. That’s an inspired idea OBB.

And dammit, neither can I now.
I also can’t quite believe I just tossed it loose into my purse
