    Good evening everyone,

I wanted to share some photos of my most recent purchase. I picked up this silverplated footed tray online, not too expensive. I know it's not everyone's style, but I'm sure a few of you have an appreciation for silverplated pieces like this. Total weight is 474 grams.

    Wowza. Great!

Did the photos in the auction clearly show the mark?

This wasn't an auction, but for the listing this was the actual photo that was provided (the last two photos are mine):

Just before I scrolled down to the photo of the bottom of the tray I said to myself - something tells me this didn't turn out to be a plated piece.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I have said many times it is not your job to tell the seller what they have when you are the buyer. If you give them what they asked for & they are happy ...whatever!!

Hope you got it for a spectacularly low price!! :D:D:D

Yes, this is my favorite type of "silverplate". Yay tarnish! When I was still selling, I would always bid on lots of nice silverplated trays. I didn't find any sterling examples but nice quality silverplate trays always sold very well and were usually very cheap because no one wanted to polish them. My margins on them were very good and they sold quickly.

Mr Nate, I cannot imagine a tray with that bottom. So bad! It looks like someone painted it black. Was it hard to clean? I don't like to clean pieces with that type of gallery. It shreds my sponges and splashes tarnish all over my t-shirt.

I once bought a piece of enameled silver plate (a Compote I think) It was a beautiful purple enamel on the inside and apparently, the owner thought it would look better to have the silver painted gold. DH told me how to get the gold paint off and it turned out that the piece was just spectacular with not a scratch on it with the protection the paint had provided. I shoulda kept it, lol!

If it ain’t silver it’s trash. That’s what 99.9% of people in my area seem to think. Well except the one guy I saw buy every plated item in an auction for really high prices whose plan it was go scrap it all for what silver content there was. I realize it can be recovered but it seems he greatly overpaid despite being an old timer who looked like he knew what he was doing otherwise. Everyone else thinks if it’s plated it’s not worth a dime though. I get so much nice plated stuff for so cheap. Big trays do sell well in my experience too. I mean not the mass produced American 20th century stuff necessarily but the older nicer stuff. I’ve been doing well on plated for a while and will continue with it until others get hip.

In this case it’s just an optical illusion from a photo the seller took. I’ll try to get another photo tonight but the bottom actually has no tarnish it’s just the lighting/reflection.
