Request for Assistance Finding Origin of a Print

Discussion in 'Art' started by Boring Mysteries, Mar 31, 2023.

  1. Hello,

I'm not sure whether I'm in the right place but I am somewhat desperate.

I came across a print the other day which appears to bear the watermark(?) of an artist named Lena Liu. I was not familiar with this artist, but upon searching her up I discovered that her huge collection of prints and collectibles are fairly popular. Photos of the print and 'signature' are attached.

I couldn't find any evidence of this particular work on her website, though. Admittedly it's a large catalogue of stuff, but I used tineye reverse image search and all I found was a blurry thumbnail from a dead website link that now appears to lead to some sort of adware/malware.

I tried using Google reverse image search as well, but the only thing to come up was an Etsy listing for an original oil painting that appears to be the same picture - my guess would be that this oil painting was done using the print for reference, or both were done using the same picture for reference. Either way, the Etsy listing provides no helpful information beyond pictures of the artwork itself. There is nothing about the artist, and the signature doesn't seem to lead me anywhere. (I've inserted photos of both the oil painting and the signature).

Now the reason I'm wondering about this is not because I think I'm sitting on a fortune or anything like that. It's just that the complete lack of any evidence for this print existing, much less being something done by this Lena Liu, is driving me crazy...in this day and age, with all the technology available on the internet, to have such trouble tracking it is making me more and more determined to solve it.

I even went so far as to e-mail Lena Liu (well, the e-mail address listed on her website) inquiring about this - but the website itself doesn't appear to have been updated since 1997, so I don't have much faith that I will get a response. As yet, I have not.

Anyway, please forgive me if this question is about something more inane than the forum is intended for. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

St. Michael being, of course, a trademark of Marks & Spencer. So a decorative print from their decor and accessories department. Date helpful.

  7. Thank you very much! So it is one of her prints...how interesting that it is so hard to find images of it online (even searching 'Lena Liu Birds of Paradise' only seems to yield the results you found). Puzzling but satisfying to know a little bit more :)

    Thanks all!

May have been exclusive to Marks & Sparks and produced in a limited quantity.

  9. Thank you! I had cropped my photo of the print only because as I studied it I realized the reflection revealed some sensitive information (i.e. where I work) - but here is a better screenshot of the Etsy listing for the oil painting, with a more clear image of where the signature can be found. The price and the description (vintage??) are...certainly something. It's nice enough but I was a bit surprised. Description reads: "Beautiful Vintage Original Oil Painting Framed & Signed On Canvas 28x24”
