Featured Is this Pointons Imari? Red crown mark...?

I bought this small Imari bowl (4"/10cms diameter at rim) at a local flea market last week for R50 (next to nothing) (I live on the south KZN coast, South Africa). I have four 1915 Royal Crown Derby demitasses and saucers, so recognised the pattern.

I don't think this is RCD.. but cannot find any pottery using this big red crown mark, with the black dot and pattern number. 2172 seems to be a Pointons pattern no. Close inspection shows the gold brushwork is a little less refined than the RCD, a bit broader lifework.. looks more like Pointons style I've seen on examples on internet.

I found out that there were lots of potteries in Staffordshire producing this Imari pattern in early 1900s.. so all a bit mysterious... But it makes a lovely sugar bowl to go with my demitasses! So beautiful.

Does anyone maybe have any ideas?

I think it is RCD, definitely looks so. I've had pieces with this mark as well

 

I've not seen that mark on any RCD (not that that means much, LOL!) nor that pattern on the outside of the bowl. It could be another factory...but danged if I know!

 

The actual crown is quite distinctive.. not like the crowns the RCD factories used.. couldn't be a chinese imari fake could it? I read about those! Apparently can be incredibly convincing...

Oddly, here's a listing that shows both a crown mark and a Pointons mark with the same pattern number, 2614, like in Chinoiserie's post. The same Imari pattern numbered 2614 was also used by Davenport Longport.

After reading how Pointons was acquired in the early 1900's by JA Robinson & Sons and all the potteries he owned maybe the crown marks were used by him? Who knows.

 

I found a set with this mark a couple of years ago and never managed to attribute it to anyone. I searched for hours to no avail. I don't think it is any of the notable potteries but is still quite striking and well decorated.

 

Just had a look through my old photos and the mark is a bit different on mine. Although the pattern is virtually identical. My guess is that they are chinese export or english mimicking the popular imari patterns the early 20th century. Everyone was doing imari at the time.

 

I think JB Miller nailed it in the second link. Although one of the crown marks is blurry, it does seem to be the same crown mark. I read the history of the company which was fascinating and Robinson bought Royal Crown Derby which is the most well-known maker of British imari. Interesting that Pointons made similar patterns. More to the story there, I think!

 

Thanks for the info. I struggled to make the link so ended up selling the set of 4 coffee cans and saucers as repro. Needless to say I didnt get much for them, despite the nice decor

Thanks so much for all your thoughts... my beautiful bowl seems to remain an enigma, because the crown design is different again from Chinoiserie's! it's very beautiful and in pristine ciondition and I still think I got a good deal for R50... (US$2,6 or £2.10)!
