Antique Satsuma teapot

I have this old teapot that is made of porcelain and unmarked. There are several holes inside near the spout and they look a bit uneven. There is no lid. The handle and spout are a different color and texture than the rest of the pot. I have no idea when it was made but I cannot find another with a handle like this one. Some of the decoration is raised. On the base, there are some pinpoint indentations in the clay. I am trying to figure out the time period and value. Any help would be appreciated.

The spout and handle do not look consistent with the body of the teapot. A few more photographs, particularly around where the spout and handle attach, might help us see if it looks like there have been repairs or restoration/recreation.

If it's porcelain, it's not satsuma.

 

Some of the "indentations" on the base could be stilt marks (from being place on stilts in the kiln) and others are just glaze pops. I think this is Japanese, but not satsuma if porcelain as janetpjohn stated above. Satsuma is pottery. Although really decorative, this is middling quality IMHO and likely for export. Why there's no mark, I dunno, but perhaps there was a sticker. I'm thinking first half 20th c somewhere and I could be all wet, but the decoration style makes me think of c. 1920s.

 

I was confused about that because sometimes I see porcelain listed as satsuma due to the design on the piece. Is there a way I can edit the title?

It is porcelain because you can see through it somewhat when held to the light. However I do not know what you would call it since it is not Satsuma. The design is intricate and looks hand painted. If it was newer and made for export it would have to have some kind of mark wouldn’t it?

Yes, which is why I find it a bit puzzling. By sticker, I mean one with "Made in Japan" or similar printed on it -- one that was removed or came off. Just conjecture on my part. The decoration is satsuma style, but it seems to have a mix of decoration styles -- the decoration on the handle and spout is not a typical satsuma design.

 

Satsuma is not porcelain but this teapot is porcelain. So I’m very confused by this teapot. I thought it was Satsuma but then I learned it can’t be Satsuma and porcelain at the same time. My teapot is definitely porcelain.

 

Hi @JenQ, it's easy to get confused by the terminology. The original (and generally higher quality) pieces referred to as "Satsuma" are stoneware, not porcelain. As @kentworld pointed out, yours appears to be "Satsuma style", of middling quality, and made for export (these were often decorated porcelain, like yours). I agree with @kentworld's assessment on dating too, likely early to mid 20th century.
