IMG_0921.jpeg IMG_0922.jpeg This photograph was in a mixed lot of prints and pictures that I bought at auction today.

It has the stamp of celebrated photographer Paul Laib on the reverse. Laib was famous for his photographs of fine art and this is a photo of a very accomplished portrait.

There is a tiny script on the bottom right with the date 1920. I assume this is the original artist’s signature.

can anyone help me to decipher this please?

    Thanks in advance

    John

I think I’ve solved my own question

    PHILIP DE LASZLO

Now can anybody identify the sitter?

I just scanned through dozens of images, and realized he must have painted hundreds of similar portraits. I even watched a slideshow video with 111 of his portraits of females. Not successful, but can see why he was a popular portrait painter. All of the women have a similar idealized look. Good luck! I hope somebody identifies her.

Yeah I had a ruddy good go with image search plus added description details. Hundreds of similar, but no cigar

Yes, society portrait painter like Boldini. I see the 1920 but looks a little late for that year.

Wow, that is wonderful! Great work!

I just read the entry in the catalogue. Looks like the original painting is still in the collection of her family, or descendants. Makes me wonder whether somebody commissioned photographs of it so that family members could have copies? She died young, and had four children. Just speculation, but maybe.

I managed to contact the foundation responsible for cataloguing the artist's work and they said that is exactly what they did and that Laib worked closely with the artist to provide prints for families and friends.
