Old Chinese thingy bob with feet

I've just picked this up and broke into double figures with it (and into a sweat). Things often go wrong when I spend more than a tenner. At first I thought Chinese celadon maybe but having doubts now. Perhaps the square spiral pattern is a bit too stereotypical. Perhaps the bottom of the feet are a bit too clean. Perhaps the crackle is a bit too crackly. Nothing similar showing on Google.

 

I think it is trying to be a tripod censer but the craquelle looks kind of forced. I would have thought celadon glaze as well BWDIK!

 

It is celadon glaze.
Celadon simply refers to the colour, that pale green, often with a slightly blueish tinge.

Celadon was a shepherd in a French play that was popular around the time these wares were first introduced to Europe. His costume was this colour, hence the name.

 

I always wondered where the term Celadon came from! What a great piece of trivia!

Thanks for this. I spent ages trying to find the name of the pattern before I bought it. I think I have seen it called something else too. Greek things have a similar pattern

 

It's also called a Greek key. The wikipedia.org entry will provide information and examples.

I suspect it's a home ceramic ware -- one decorated the greenware and then it was fired in a small kiln. Was a fairly popular hobby in the 70s. My mom made a few things -- one was an open-mouthed frog that she kept her kitchen scrubby in.

 

It's quite pleasing to the eye.
