@Joan - You probably meant to say 1858.
There are mylar sleeves for paper currency. It would be good to put that in one as it will protect it and also reduce the fold creases. The note in your post may have double collector interest. Not only would it appeal to currency collectors, but the old steam engine vignette may give it appeal to train collectors as well.

Oops--you're right. I also wrote 1958 twice, so I had to correct all three dates!!! Edit: thank you to all who pointed that out. I'd like to think my eyes were seeing 1800s, but my fingers were typing 1900s.

Thank you for that information and advice, @smallaxe. I also have some collectible currency and other small paper items that should be stored in something more protective, so I looked up mylar sleeves on Amazon, but couldn't find any that specifically said they were made of mylar. I was seeing PVC, polypropylene, and vinyl sleeves. I found several sources on eBay selling mylar sleeves, so I'm thinking I should order from one of those sellers. Would 7 3/4" x 3 1/2" size be big enough for the Wisconsin bank note? [edit: I should call my sister and have her measure it--it seemed larger than a modern bill, but maybe just my imagination]

Bosko, your terms "brain-f@#% burgs" and "Twilight Zone" brought a smile to my face. I almost wish the town were more like how you're imagining it. It's actually kind of a bedroom community for people who work in Minneapolis-St. Paul--with the usual fast food restaurants, huge Walmart, 8-plex theater, etc. etc. The thrift store/flea market, however, is in a world of its own--it's a two-story dairy barn that was moved, or I guess actually original to the "Heritage Center" property in the center of town.

@Joan - Personally, I would be hesitant of getting archival supplies from ebay or amazon because of the suspect Chinese materals, which may or may not be what they say. You want something really safe and non-reactive without harmful chemicals. Something like mylar or archival polyester. There are several companies that appear to be reputable sellers of true archival supplies. The problem though, is that you usually have to buy a quantity. Several years ago, I determined everything I thought I would need for the next 5 or 10 years, and ordered a bunch of supplies from Archival Methods or Conservation Resources (don't remember which, offhand) and from Gaylord Archival so I'd always have some handy.
Something like this might work for you:

they also have a 2-pocket version.

Thank you so much, smallaxe. I just ordered two of the 3-pocket pages--only $6.52 including shipping. Much better than buying more than I'll ever use.

Joan-Those little 'Leave It To Beaver' Maybury towns probably exist only in our memories now.It was where most of Us grew up,my god- with only three TV stations & no internet-all the adventure and magic was from our young minds...and what a creation it was.

Soooooo true, except we had four TV stations, or maybe it was 3 stations, but 4 channels because we got both MN and WI channels, or something like that.

@Joan Research that Wisconsin bill if you ever decide to sell it. After hubs passed I was left with his collection of odd pieces of currency one of which was a Federal Reserve bank note printed by a bank in Hemet, California. I listed it on ebay with an opening bid commensurate with others of the same denomination and condition, but I couldn't find any from the Hemet bank. I got a bunch of bids right away and an offer for what I thought was a ridiculous sum to end the sale early. I passed that and received an email from a fellow to wait for the end of the auction or, if I was going to take an offer, sell it to him. He ended up being high bidder and informed me that I had quite a rare bill. A $5 note that sold for well over $1000! I don't remember how much exactly, it's been probably 8 or 9 years but it was certainly a bucket more than I expected. Good luck! And that's a sweet sewing box, wish I was closer to that thrift store, I'm in southern Wisconsin almost at the Illinois border.

Thank you for your advice, Linda, I'll pass it along to my sister since the box and contents belong to her. Did you see the post from smallaxe who wrote that another note from the same Wisconsin bank sold for over $600, but was in much better condition than my sister's note. He thought hers could be worth over $50, and maybe over $100. Also mentioned it may have double collector interest with the old steam engine vignette.

Anyway, you were definitely wise not to end the auction early for your Hemet, CA bank note. And nice of the other ebayer to advise you not to end it early. I had something similar happen during my early days selling on eBay, but it turned out I should have taken the offer because the guy who made it ended up winning the auction at a much lower price than his offer, darn!! On the other hand, other bidders would have been really disappointed, and I've learned since then that eBay strongly discourages ending auctions early for that reason.

If you end an auction early now and it already has a bid eBay will charge you FVF according to what the bid was when you ended the auction.

I could not find an item that was listed and had a bid on it last week. I messaged the buyer with that information before ending the listing and told her I would list it with a BIN for that amount if I ever found it which still has not happened.:arghh::banghead:

eBay immediately deducted the money from my account. Luckily it was only 86 cents because I started the auction at $6.99 but in eBay's eyes I was trying to scam them out of their "fair share".:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Thank you, bercrystal, I completely forgot about this policy. But now remember I was charged a FVF a few years ago for canceling bids and ending a jewelry auction early after I discovered some damage I hadn't noticed. I think the bidding was up to $400--ouch! I emailed the bidders explaining the damage and said I'd be relisting it with revisions to the condition. I'm glad you reminded me of this policy.
