What type of mortar and pestle is this?

    It's very small and narrow. And I'm sure about the pestle but is that a mortar or just a holder for the pestle. There doesn't appear to be any wear inside and it isn't rounded like a mortar usually is.

    Exactly. I used to have one that was Souvenir of Somewhere, when I was a little kid.

    More like a press, but I can't see how you would get the pressed substance out again. :confused:

    even the modest wood mortar has room to crush stuff up.....and a wide rim.

    a butter churn...not so much..

    Primitive travel pill or spice crusher?

    IMHO, it would have to be for something dry. Anything moist/wet would stick inside.
