Painting has some age. Does not appear to be signed - observed under blacklight. Inscribed verso but I can't decipher it to translate. Anyone else? I apologize for not having an overall of the back - I know I took it but it is not on my cloud. Frame is stamped MADE IN FRANCE. Unframed measures 9.5 x 13 in. Thank you! The last line of the stamped text in the last photo says -bizon School", presumably "Barbizon School", a 19th century French movement of landscape painting.

I think the written text says ---- de Barbizon. It could be École de Barbizon, which means Barbizon School.

The Barbizon School were outdoor painters, as opposed to the earlier studio painters.

It is different, but I see what you mean.
The one in the link looks more Barbizon school to me than yours.

The stamps leads one to conclude yours is a decorative painting rather than fine art. 1960s or a tad earlier, I'd think. Is the line "_______ de Barbizon" written in fountain or ball point pen? The pickled frame wouldn't be older than 1930s when the finish was introduced into modern interiors by the British decorator Syrie Maugham.

That is probably why I didn't recognize the style as Barbizon.

I would agree that this is newer. factory art, but it's a nice, atmospheric composition. I can imagine how it would look from the brush of a better trained, more exacting artist.

I guess I have usually seen the factory art with staples on the canvas and not nail heads. The owner -who passed a few years ago at 94- replaced a lot of the art with new frames. We have a ton of old frames in the basement we are trying to weed through. With over 150 pieces of art, I won't be overly worried about making a mistake with this one. Thank you so much!!!

I think "decorative art" might be more accurate than "factory art." The kind of thing sold in furniture stores to middle class customers back in the day. There might be more information to be found here if you would/could post a photograph shot from straight on and with less cropping.

Could it be a title: "Environs de Barbizon" (Barbizon surroundings)?

Yes, it could, and it fits better in the scribbles than École.:)

First letter looks more like a G to me than E.

Showing a whole painting, back also, is more helpful than just bits and pieces of it.

In my post it clearly states "I apologize for not having an overall of the back - I know I took it but it is not on my cloud."
