Cool carved plant stand?

Found this “table” for sale locally. It’s about 16” tall and 16” wide so I assume it’s a plant stand or something rather than a table as the seller called it. They found it in a storage unit. It’s got a great look. They are about an hour round trip drive and are asking $50. Trying to determine what a good price would be and guesses as to what I could potentially get for it if I sell? It doesn’t look overly old and I don’t know much about this kind of stuff. Just based off how cool looking it is I feel like I could probably find someone to pay $75-$100 for it but not sure if it would be worth anything more than that? Don’t know if I want to drive that far if that’s it’s ceiling. Hoping to know what it is if not a plant stand and where/when it may be from? Maybe I’ll just toss a spider plant on it.

Great find, thanks! I forgot to mention that I thought it looked Indian but that’s east to say in hindsight ;). The one you found has a single bird/dragon and the one for sale has two but otherwise just about the same. Any guess as to what it would be used/made for?

    Lovely table, J.
The seller in the Catawiki listing is Dutch, which means he should know better. This is a classic carved teak table from the town of Jepara, on the north coast of Java, Indonesia. Most of these were made during the late colonial days, in the first half of the 20th century.
During that time Jepara carvers were supported by a special government program to boost local crafts, and there was much demand from both colonials and the Dutch furniture market.
The price is very good, jump in that car!:playful:

The double-headed Javanese peacock is a tribute to the old royal status of Jepara. Both heads wear Javanese crowns with winged 'sumping', ear ornaments. Winged sumping mean that the ruler should listen to his or her people.
The legs are Nagas, Javanese dragons/snakes.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

I'm sorry u missed out on that !!!
Being an art guy, my 1st thought was that there's more than $50 worth of sublime carving there......& worth an hour of my time !
Sorry I didn't see it sooner............... but then...it sounds like the drive may have been for naught anyways !!

Same here, but it was my first reply when I logged in this morning (Europe). The time zone difference got in the way.:(

Me too! I decided I would grab it either way before more replies came in, but it was already gone. Should have followed my instinct and grabbed it when I could!
