Featured Is this possible on a piece of 9ct gold jewelry? Please help

Hi all,

I bought this necklace(converted from an antique bracelet actually) tagged 9ct gold today at an antique jewelry shop. When I checked it under loupe at home, I noticed there's some gold peeling off and the tone of the said 9ct gold is much more silver. I've emailed the shop but what do you think? Could it actually be silver gilt or normal for 9ct gold?I heard there's a technique of coating low karat gold with high karat gold, but I cant be sure.

PS: not sure if this helps, all similar examples I can found online is made of solid karat gold, so it would be weird if this one is indeed silver-gilt? But the piece is beautiful anyway and the chain is hallmarked 14ct gold, I just want to make sure I'm not overpaying!

 

Much of where you have marked are the joints which will have been soldered - but overall I can't see enough detail in the images to make a considered assessment.

 

the chain is marked as it's a modern addition, but the mount isn't as it used to be a part of a victorian bracelet, I've seen a lot of examples of solid gold thus being too confident that I forgot to ask the seller to confirm. Hopefully I ll received their reply tomorrow, otherwise I ll just pay another visit

 

yes but also one mount remained well perserved that is more golden than others. And tiny gold leaf falling off from the base when scratched by fingernail. Considering the soldering, most of my gold piece will only be darkened comparing to this one which becomes brighter？I think maybe resulted from less abrasion between links. Definitely some coating there, but unsure about the base metal...

 

Could it have been regilt to improve appearance of soldered places?

 

additional information: the hallmark on the chain is italian, so I assume even the alternation is vintage

Yeah probably and definitely gilt since the supposed 9ct mount looks more golden than the 14ct chain. The piece just looks strange to me but based on my research on similar item and the reputation of this shop I don't believe it will be silver or base metal gilt, but I will discuss with the seller and see how he thinks on it!

 

Yes, believed to be victorian as there are some silimar pieces you can find online, and the crafting is beautiful, that's why I didn't even doubt about the authenticity of the metal and only found out these at home!

An update on this post: I took it to the shop today, they have it tested again using both electronic test and acid test, turns out that it's 14ct with 22-24ct gilding. Happy ending then! Thank you for your comments, please do enjoy this photo of this beauty.

Looking at the full size photo Bronwen posted, I think it could be late Georgian, 1820s-30s, but let's wait for other opinions.

 

Hmm, I just bought it as antique so dont really get any idea how old it exactly is! From the record on an oline auction site, they are mostly tagged as (late) victorian to edwardian, but I did find a brooch stated georgian with very similar claw setting, but whenever it was made, I still feel super lucky to have it at that price!
