Either its a reproduction from the 80s,or its original and has been refinished to death. Its hard to tell without more pics (of the underside, bottom, etc)

If the top tilts you could call it a loo table.

Looks like pine. I would think from the early 20th century and yes, it has been refinished poorly. An excellent-quality once-and-for-all refinish would do wonders at this point.

To me the top looks replaced.
Can you show pictures of the underside of the top please.

Very heavy seems to argue for older. The tilt top looks original. Thanks for rescuing it from the bonfire!

Then it is a Loo table if it tilts. The game of Loo was popular in the 19thc. Oval tables like this are sold in the trade as Loo tables - they are often inlaid with marquetry and valued based on the quality and condition. Usually walnut veneered in quadrants.

I have an English walnut tilt top ca. 1870, with burl/burr veneered on the turtle top in quadrants, as you say. I've always understood mine to be a tilt-top breakfast table, with the top to tilt down and lock when not in use, so the table could be pushed back out of the way.

Depends on the size. My dining table, circa 1780, is an oblong tilt top and is certainly a breakfast table. The round smaller ones tend to be games.

So it's the shape and size that are more important than the fact that it tilts or not? Never too late to learn something around here! :)

Well, my turtle top is certainly oblong, and large as well, so it appears that what I know about it is right. The o.p.'s is certainly oblong and appears too be pretty large also.

Think this is reasonably old but not antique. Probably circa 1930? Would think European in origin. Having a hard time telling what wood this is. Beech? Elm? Thought maybe pine at first but the new pics look more like a hard wood.

I'll stick with a slightly earlier date ca. 1900-20, but still 20th century. Maybe pine, maybe elm. In either case a complete refinish would yield a handsome table!

Hi, thanks for that. In your opinion is this something I should restore or is it worth getting a professional? Thanks :)
