    Didn't buy this (yet)
Wondering if someone can identify the artist. A knowlegeable person says it's 'Gionet'.
I found a few painting artists with that name, but none were old or painting in this style.
Painting is on wood (including woodworm holes). Cardboard (frustum-ish) back

Do you need to worry about the worm holes actually having worms? I only ask because (by chance have some experience with this-- also in Holland.) In the 1980s I lived in Leiden and the owner of the house we were renting replaced a wooden piano bench because it had worm holes.

No idea if worm holes are anything to worry about beyond the actual damage?? I do like the painting.

I think these are old holes. And they only seem to be in that corner of the signature. If there still had been worms in the wood, there would probably be more holes and some wood dust around the holes.

Agree, it is nice. And kudos for finally plucking up the courage to post it.:playful:
:shy: That's what it looked like to me, nothing definite though.

Is that a white farmhouse at the end of the road? If so, it could be Flanders. (Or a number of other regions.;))
Some consider all of Holland a wormhole.:joyful:
Shake it, just in case. If sawdust comes out, they are still alive and kicking.:nailbiting:

Certainly not the work of the Australian artist John Glover. His landscapes were in a more Classical style.

That’s a nice painting. I find it a bit borderline morbid/heavy (but it has some ‘depth’) But then again I don’t know much about art.

My first guess won’t have been Gionet but also more Gionea or maybe even Gioner. Hopefully we can figure it out. I would probably have bought it anyway if the price was ‘right’. But wormholes would have worried me (but I wouldn’t have know any better)

Given the steeple, looks northern European.

I also thought that could be a possibility, but the J Glover I found has a clear sig (and, as Debora pointed out, a different style)

Yes, his is a typical early 19th century style, whereas this painting style and technique are much later.

The dark tones are reminiscent of Flemish and southern Dutch paintings of the early-mid 20th century. Which doesn't necessarily mean it is Flemish or Dutch.

I think Gionet is right; interestingly a name though of French origin, hardly found outside Canada.

There are many French names in both Flanders and the Netherlands, where this painting could have been painted.
