Antique French (?) trinket box ID

This gorgeous trinket box was my late father's but unfortunately I know nothing about it. Looks French to me, the body - maybe brass - is carved or ???

It sits on ball feet and is 14cm long, 4.5cm high.

The best part is the stunning butterfly wing sailing ship scene signed Seraphin and set into what feels like plastic, but could be shell or even shagrin stretched over something solid - has a vaguely crazed look to it.

The interior is padded and covered with velvety material and the base has a moired appearance.

Would love to know if anyone knows anything about the age/make/country of origin etc of this item.

I suspect the center plaque is celluloid.

Thanks Debora, you mean the green part? The very centre is definitely butterfly wing under a clear cover - you can see the iridescent wings clearly with a loupe. The ships have been painted on I presume.

I wonder if this is a 'Grand Tour' item?

To my eye, it doesn't look nearly old enough. I see 1920s, 1930s. What do others think?

I think it is post-Grand Tour period, 1910s-20s. I could be wrong though.

Edit: Seraphin does sound French, so you are probably right about it being French.
