Featured interesting Meissen tea pot

appears to be a factory second that was sold as a blank and later repainted. At least thats what I was told. From a recent auction.

 

I think they auctioneer wasn't too bright. Meissen didn't sell blanks as far as I know, and that paint is way too good for amateur hour anyway.

 

Seconds were scores across the crossed sword marks ,single or several times with ground score marks ,,,,and later decoration was done by hausmaliers ( Unsure of spelling) the above item does not appear to be a second . but if you look closely at the mark you can see there is a scoring mark across it. No?

 

I'd want that in my hand...or a fine close up , before agreeing to that....

 

• one slash – sold undecorated from 1740 through 1938
• two slashes – tableware deemed of unsuitable quality from 1852 through 1870
• three slashes – items of brack quality, (contained firing faults), from 1852 through 1870
• four slashes – considered lowest quality, from 1852 through 1870

This is an actual Meissen quality mark found on a tea service that was listed for $4995.00.


Seller described the set as exquisite Meissen quality, and the photos did show that the set was gorgeous to an untrained eye, but even so, it was not up to Meissen’s standards, and there was no mention that the factory mark showed that Meissen deemed the set to be unsuitable for tableware.

 

No ..It/ they would be very obvious if present . For further info and indications of appearance of slash/ ground cancellation marks, ie seconds indicators , Google ... "Meissen qualifying marks/ slashes"....hope this helps.


Sunday silence.....I think you are right ..have enlarged on other computer and DOES appear to be scored..I concede and offer my apologies if so.

 

To qualify the indications for second standards are here as following....
1 slash.. sold undecorated from 1740 to 1938
2 slashes.tableware deemed unsuitable from 1852 to 1870
3 slashes brack quality, firing faults from 1852 to1870
4 slashes .. lowest quality 1852 to870..
As there does not appear to be any indicators on your item as being a second,and considering the good quality of decorations it is considered OK.
Dresden was destroyed in WW II...porcelain industry, doll manufacturing totally destroyed.
