Featured A boaring frame

I was really hoping to find a hallmark on this after I got it home. Sadly I did not find a mark of any kind. Probably a plated item but I’m putting it here in silver anyways. I’m imagining it had a mirror in it. Does anyone think it may have had anything other than that? It may be missing its only functional part, it may only be plated, but damn do I love this little piece. I’m a big sucker for a figural animal on any object, particularly silver/Silverplate though. Any thoughts on where it came from? Guessing late 19th/early 20th century Northern Europe? Russia crossed my mind as a possibility but Europe seems more likely. I didn’t get the eyes under a loupe yet.

I love it ! That sure looks like silver to me ! My knee jerk was French ?

 

It does look pretty good. I’m about 50/50 solid vs. plated. There’s one tiny spot that has a flash of red but it’s a tucked away spot that wouldn’t get touched. Might just be an odd tarnish spot rather than a thin spot in plating showing a glimmer of copper. None of the high spots show any wear at all.

Yeh I though maybe France, Austria, Germany kind of area.

Edit: it would likely be marked if silver and from those places though.

Ditto. It deserves a polish.
Grapes and boar, wine and hunting, makes me think German. Although they didn't have exclusive rights to wine and hunting, of course.

 

if it's a mirror, it's gotta be a little to have that red eyed boar staring back at you ... Eh ?

 

It is a bit strange that the back of the handle is open like that. Like it was only supposed to lie flat.

 

Delightful and a bit spooky-it's a got a fairy tale nature to it.I couldn't have passed that by !

 

That hadn’t even crossed my mind, but of course you’re right. Maybe the mirror portion broke and the owners took a back panel off to remove bits? It doesn’t really look like something was removed though. It would be pretty strange go just see the backside of the mirror. Perhaps it had a velvet backing or other similar material? Good point!

 

It is whimsical. I had to buy a few things with it in a bag lot to get it. Well worth it and I made a small profit on that other stuff already.

Agreed, I think it’s fantastic and fantabulous! A brush hadn’t occurred to me. Possible! I think they usually require more depth of frame to stabilize the brush head which is why it didn’t cross my mind. It is possible though.

 

It did make me wonder who it was for/used by if it is indeed a mirror. A pretty badass lady or maybe a vain gent?

 

Btw I think the eyes are just glass. They appear to have a lot of bubbles. Rubies would have been cooler but glass is fine.

Do not hold your breath!!! I will if I do though. I was thrilled to find it in a bag lot during the final seconds of a three day sale. I couldn’t believe no one else wanted it. Granted it was with four Dutch Silverplate repousse ashtrays with typical village scenes and priced at $25 or so. So maybe they only focused on the typical stuff and not the mirror and didn’t want to pay up for them. I ended up getting it for much less and felt happy with myself all the way home.
