    Hello!

I’m hoping someone can help me; some years ago, I came into possession of my maternal grandfather’s signet ring, and having decided to conduct genealogy research on him recently have been taking a closer look at it for the first time in some years.

    (Photo Attached)

What I’ve been able to ID so far are the makers mark (which appears to be HW), the fact it is 9 CT with 37.5% purity, and what appears to be an anchor symbol with a K mark (which puts it around the 1950s).

I’m hoping someone with a more discerning eye might be able to tell me more about these marks.

The ring itself is plain on the outside with no sigil on the face.

If you haven't found it already, you may want to join familysearch.org, the genealogical web site of the Church of the Latter-day Saints. It's free to join.

I have in fact! It’s proven super useful. My maternal grandfather was also a WW2 veteran and life long policeman.

In what part of the world did your grandfather live? (I ask because this is an international forum.)

Is there a letter in front of the H.W. in the cartouche? And are you sure that's an anchor?

I honestly can’t tell either with the letter, and the anchor was a guess. Just based on shape, etc.

I believe the maker's initials are JHW = John Henry Wynn, Birmingham.
It looks like a sideways anchor.
The date letter could also be an X

You can get your grandfathers service records from the MoD, I did that for my Pa.

From what I see it looks like your date is wrong you see the k has a different shape to the one produced in the 50s infact what I gather the exact date your ring was hallmarked is 1782 this link will help you https://www.

John Henry Wynn was a jeweller located in Soho Hill in Birmingham founded in 1899 and later set up shop in the jewellery quarter where the factory remained until 1996.

bit of a pickle , that...

From what I see, it looks like your information is wrong.
