Is there a big market for glassware? My mom has a number of glass and ceramic things.

This is most of the rest of the furniture photos I took yesterday, hopefully this isn't posting too much.

I'll try to get measurements on these things the next time I go back to her house.

I believe these are more likely to be by Fenton than Fostoria.

To answer your question, yes, some glassware is very desirable, some not so much. I circled something I think would have some value :)

Here on Cape Cod we have quite a few tag sale companies, all reputable. They will come in, value everything, price it and run the tag sale. They are invested in getting you the most for your money because, of course, it raises their percentage. With all that stuff if you aren't an expert, as someone said earlier, you could end up selling something quite valuable for a pittance and you'll get tired of doing the research. Look around in your area to see if you have such a company and get reviews from people who have used them. I highly recommend this procedure because they will have a better idea of value since they are on site and can handle the items.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll have to investigate if there is a place like that here. I imagine they may take a large cut of the sale profits.

One small item in her inventory could be potentially be worth more than all the other items combined. Having someone that might recognize that could be worth giving them their cut. You missing the item could cost you more than the cut you’d pay someone. Learning the ins and outs of selling this stuff takes an immense amount of time and effort. Doing it wrong can be costly.

I hate to be a bummer here, but as a dealer who frequents yard and estate sales, I can usually find one or more items priced well below value. It is how I make a living and no one can be an expert is all fields. I know about jewelry, American 19th and 20th century pottery and glass plus a few other things. There is no way I could accurately price other items without help. Plus estate sales are shopped by people who are looking for deals, no way things priced anywhere near retail would sell.

You can sell the items on ebay, which will still sell below retail, but you need to consider your time spent photographing, researching and writing the listing for each item - one at a time. If you can spend the time and have the interest then go for it.

If it is more important to you to clear the items out and get some cash available to help your mom sooner rather than later, maybe an estate sale company is the way to go.

Good luck to you and let us know how you do :)

Exactly what I was going to suggest!

I also sell on Ebay, and if this was my family's estate, I would hire an estate sale company without hesitation. Try to get a recommendation for an estate sale company, a lot of people are doing this now, so would be good to get a company that's been around for a while, well regarded. There are a lot of heavy items shown, and no way really to sell those on Ebay easily. And many here have made the point, if you piece things out without knowing a about glass, etc. you could accidentally sell something way under value. A good estate sale company should know how to price.

    Best of luck!

On the top table shown, with one drawer and two pulls, with the marble top, is there a brand name shown anywhere on the inside of the drawer, or on the back or bottom etc.? Many of my older furniture pieces of this era are marked. Even if that table doesn’t have a high market value, I’ve found that little end tables like that can be very practical, and are often better made than what you can buy new in a store today.

Do any of the furniture pieces have markings?

In the earlier photo of the glass hutch with the pottery and glassware inside, I saw a yellow pitcher or creamer on the bottom with a ring design. Is there a marking of the underside of that piece?

Concur with the others about getting a professional seller or auction house. When we’ve had similar situations at home, everyone takes pieces he or she wants, and then the rest go up for sale, with the proceeds split. People may have a sentimental attachment to one piece or another.

    Good luck!

Yeah. I think an estate sale may be the best way.

I'll look at the marble top next time I'm there.

I'm not sure if they have markings, I'll have to look more closely. I'm thinking most do not, but I could be wrong.

    This one?

I can try to look next time I'm there.

I've finally gotten some measurements of the pieces I've posted but haven't had time to post it yet. Always seem busy. . . Hopefully soon.
